CONSTIPATION

A condition resulting in less frequent bowel movements with hard dry stools, that can become painful and difficult to pass.

BRAVO ESOPHAGEAL PH TESTING

A Gastroesophageal Reflux test using mucosal attached telemetry pH electrode placement and recording.  A small capsule containing a radiotelemetry pH sensor is inserted endoscopically in the esophagus and temporarily attached to the esophagus wall.  The capsule monitors esophageal pH levels over a 48-hour period.  This information is then transmitted to an external pager-sized receiver worn by the patient that records pH levels.  After the 48-hour testing period, data is downloaded from receiver to a computer that contains software for analyzing pH levels.  A written interpretation of the computer analysis is generated by the facility or person reading it (BRAVO).  The capsule does not need to be removed as it spontaneously detaches within 7-10 business days and passes through the digestive tract.

CROHN’S DISEASE

A type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) resulting in the inflammation, or swelling of the digestive tract.

CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY

Is a diagnostic procedure using a vitamin sized capsule containing an imaging device that captures pictures of your digestive tract, used to evaluate the small bowel to identify any abnormalities.  As the capsule passes through the small intestine the images will be sent to a data recorder worn by the patient. Once the capsule passes through the body the images are downloaded onto a viewable device, and examined by a medical professional.

DIARRHEA

A common condition involving frequent bowel movements with an excessive amount of liquid in the stool.

COLONOSCOPY

A endoscopic procedure performed by a gastroenterologist to exam the inner lining of the colon. The procedure provides a visual diagnosis (Colon Polyps, Lesions, Ulcerations) and grants the opportunity for biopsies to be taken from suspected cancer lesions as well as randomly to diagnosis chronic diseases of the colon (Colitis or Crohn’s Disease). A report is generated by the physician whom reviews the biopsy results from pathology to make an accurate diagnosis.

DIVERTICULOSIS & DIVERTICULITIS

Diverticulosis is the presence of “diverticula” or small pouches on the weaker points of the bowel wall.
Diverticulitis occurs when these pouches become infected or inflamed.
